Despite the elements (it being windy, chilly, and rainy off and on), the 2024 annual Celilo Back to School Health Fair was a success!
We were at Celilo Park this year, set up alongside 20 other amazing community partners handing out school supplies and sharing resources with students and their families. NWH handed out composition books, notebook paper, scissors, highlighters, compass and protractors, and scientific calculators for the older students. Thanks to a generous donation from Yakamart, we also had a bunch of shoes to give away at the event. We gave out 61 pairs of shoes and have ongoing outreach along on the River to hand out the rest of the shoes.
We had a special royal guest join us for the festivities---Whitney Jackson, the Luk-a-meen Queen drove up from Warm Springs! She is an Ichishkin language teacher in addition to being royalty, so she handed out Ichishkin Sinwit educational materials and games for students. She also helped with pronunciation for the Ichishkin scavenger hunt. It was wonderful to have her there and for all the kids to practice the language.
